How fortunate was I to catch even a sliver in time at the venerable Boston rock n' roll venue, The Rat? The Fenway was my 'hood in the 90s and I very much had a rock n' roll heart (hell, I still do!). If The Channel was Boston's answer to the 9:30 Club in Washington DC, then The Rat was certainly Boston's own CBGB, am I right?
The attitude was razor-sharp, the bands were wicked loud, and the bathrooms were appropriately disgusting. My oft-told tale is of the time I scooped up a pee-soaked twenty dollar bill from the men's room floor while other, more scary-looking dudes looked on incredulously. The bill was then wiped off as best it could be, then exchanged for a couple of pitchers for me and my then-girlfriend (now my wife). A lasting romance, courtesy of The Rat!
I used a few reference images when making this print. The one that helped most with perspective and scale was taken by Larry Bouchie. He says: "I took that Rat photo late Dec ‘86 one Sunday, driving through Kenmore Square. I was at the Rat about two nights every week back then. That day, I spotted a bunch of open parking spots right out front, and I had a Canon Sureshot camera handy. I parked and took a couple of photos." Thanks for taking such an iconic image, Larry!
